The United Nations commemorates the 70th anniversary of the publication of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights
PeaceeverTV Reported at UNHQ: October 17 is the day of the signing of the UN World Human Rights Day. This year is just the anniversary of the 70th anniversary of the signing of the UN World Human Rights Day. United Nations Secretary-General Mr. António GUTERRES attended the commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the signing of World Human Rights Day and delivered a speech. Also present at the commemoration today are the presidents of the United Nations Economic and Social Council, the Permanent Representative of France to the United Nations and the Permanent Ambassador of Burkina Faso to the United Nations, who speak separately during the event.
Today’s commemoration was hosted by the NGO “ATD Fourth World”.
This year, as we celebrate the 70th anniversary of the proclamation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (signed at the Human Rights Plaza in Paris in 1948), it is crucial to recall the fundamental connection between extreme poverty and human rights, and to reaffirm that people living in poverty are disproportionately affected by many human rights violations.
Joseph Wresinski, founder of the International Movement ATD Fourth World, was one of the first persons to highlight this direct link between human rights and extreme poverty. On October 17, 1987, he gathered over a hundred thousand people at that same Human Rights Plaza in Paris, to honour the victims of extreme poverty, violence and hunger. They proclaimed that poverty is a violation of human rights and affirmed the need to come together to ensure that these rights are respected.
These convictions are inscribed in a commemorative stone unveiled on this day. Replicas of the commemorative stone have been unveiled around the world and serve as a gathering place to celebrate the Day. One such replica is located in the garden of United Nations Headquarters (North Lawn) and is the site of the annual commemoration of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty in New York.
Today’s commemoration was attended by all members of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, the Permanent Mission of France to the United Nations, the Permanent Mission of Burkina Faso to the United Nations, and the NGO Social Development Committee and International Committee. On October 17, support for the full support of United Nations agencies and non-governmental organizations such as the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.
